Spark Networks Acquires Schmooz-a-Palooza

I’ve been hearing a lot about Spark Networks acquisition of Stu & Lew Productions, creator of “Schmooz-a-Palooza”. For those that don’t know, Spark owns Jdate, the largest Jewish online dating service and Stu & Lew runs big parties in LA for the Jewish community.

I’ve heard from competitors as well as those close to the deal that feel jilted by Spark and question the motivation and tactics which drove the purchase. Basically all the hubub surrounds the LA and New York party scene on Christmas eve and how Spark has allegedly unfairly dealt with other party promoters. Who knew the Jewish Christmas Eve party scene was so full of intrigue and deception?

That a dating site would be unfair to it’s perceived competition should come as no surprise, there are more than a few executives in the industry more than happy to smile and pat you on the back while writing down your secret sauce and building it in-house. I know, I’ve been in some of those meetings. That’s the way certain organizations in the online dating industry have chosen to conduct business.

It sucks for some involved, yes. The little guy quite often gets steamrolled in the end when it comes to working with large partners. Qué Será, Será.

Mark Brooks called this deal “a bold move and a precedent”, which I don’t understand. People have been throwing Jewish-themed parties for at least 20 years on Christmas eve. Speed dating, Lock-n-Key parties, done done and done.

I’ve never heard of Stu & Lew until this week, although I hear their email list is what helped kickstart JDate’s growth.

Remember MatchLive and IRL Networks? Probably not. That’s what happens when you try to scale national singles events up enough to be profitable. Simple and small is what works.

Climbing Up the Charts, Template Wierdness

Technoratistats

I’m keeping a close eye on the Technorati stats as people move over from the old website. I’ve jumped up 400,000 spots in three days. The old blog rank was 21,698. I’m hoping to get back up there in two months, depending on how many people link and trackback here.

The template for the site was being reset back to the default due to me not installing the mobile version of the blog properly. As of now, the site should be viewable on Blackberry, Treo and other PDA’s.

Stay In Touch With the Hug Shirt

Forget ‘toothing, give long distance hugs to loved ones this holiday season with the Hug Shirt.

Once you figure out how to configure Bluetooth, the Hug Me Java software and your cellphone, all you have to is press the hotspots on the shirt to transmit that lovin’ feeling to your significant other, as long as they are wearing the same shirt and have a decent signal. Supposedly they will feel pressure in the corresponding location on their shirt.

No word on the underwear/panty set.

Social Planning With PlanJam

Planjam PlanJam is a newly relaunched site for, among other things, finding a date and a place to take your date.

Whether it’s your first date, blind date, or a romantic idea for that special occassion - our interactive interface will allow you to plan a fun, romantic, or affordable date from over 120 unique date ideas. From a romantic dinnner to the thrill of sky diving, PlanJam provides endless combinations of fun things to do.

If you find a date idea that interests you, drag the icon into the basket below to store it while you continue searching. Once you have finished building the date, you can choose share your date with others, or simply click on the finish planning button to view, map, and/or print your completed date.

Originally focused on the SoCal market, this is a site trying to do to many things, none of them very well.

The only thing of note is the drag-n-drop planning feature, which looks kind of interesting if you’re into multiple-event days or dates.

Planing a date: Countless other city guides like Citysearch, event-based sites like Heyletsgo, the list goes on. Same goes for finding local events. Planning a trip or planning an event? Unless I’m missing something, don’t we have Orbitz, Travelocity, Expedia, etc already? I don’t see what’s different about PlanJam and there is nothing on the site explaining what it does.

The database is so empty there is an echo. Hopefully that will change, at which time I’ll revisit the site create a few marathon dates.
